 Enrich The Soil Naturally

For Better Health And A Fatter Wallet

A big factor in the price we pay for fresh fruit and vegetables is transport and storage costs. Transport and storage use lots of money and lots of energy.

So growing your own food is a great idea. It saves money and energy.

A big bonus is you know what you and your family are eating (unlike fruit, vegetables and herbs that you buy, which may contain harmful chemicals).

The best way to make your garden more productive is to use a good garden compost.

Short of space? Here's the space saving composting method for you.

Garden compost is the perfect recycler. It uses organic waste from your food and garden to replenish and nourish the soil that will grow your next crop of fruit, vegetables and flowers.

Yet another benefit of garden compost is that it helps the soil hold moisture, enabling you to save precious water.

 7 Tips For Great Compost

A good garden compost patch needs food, air and water. Use these tips to create a healthy garden compost:

1. Shade: Choose a shady spot in your garden, out of direct sunlight.

2. Bin: Use a compost bin or make your garden compost pile directly on the ground enclosed by a wooden frame.

3. Feed: Give your garden compost a mixture of 'greens' (lawn clippings, fruit and vegetable scraps, dead flowers, leaves and plants, horse manure) and 'browns' (straw, woodchips and shredded newspaper). Avoid using onion skins as worms don't seem to like them.

4. Worms: Add some worms to your garden compost pile as they'll help speed up the composting process. Worm farms are a great investment.

5. Moisture: Keep your garden compost pile as moist as a wet sponge, but avoid over-moisturising. Too much water will create odour.

6. Air: To circulate the air in your garden compost pile, punch holes in the sides of the pile.

7. Turn: Turn your garden compost with a shovel or pitchfork at least once a week. The more often you turn your garden compost pile, the sooner it will decompose and be ready for use.

If you do everything right and turn over your garden compost pile every second day, you should produce a rich and healthy garden compost in less than 4 weeks.
